There are times in our lives when we feel a longing to change either through heartache, boredom or a deep yearning for something different. Our deepest self requires this change as a path to wholeness. Often this change necessitates a releasing of old habits, a marking of a new transition in life or a journey to discover where we go from here.
Throughout the globe individuals have wandered into the wilderness as a means for achieving this awakening. Australian aborigines go on a walkabout, Native Americans fast on vision quests, the Hindu make their journey to Kumbha -mela at Prayag and the ancient Celts wandered the hills, staff in hand. The earth journey/medicine walk has been an ancient practice of asking for healing, inspiration, release, and connection with the divine/spirit.
Even today the medicine walk, walkabout or as I choose to call it the earth journey continues to be practiced as a path of opening to self through our relationship with nature. It offers the space and time to wander within the landscape of the sacred inner and outer self. It is a day’s journey upon the face of the earth, which will reflect through signs and symbols your inward journey.
Through connecting with nature you are connecting to your own sources of guidance and support during these times of transitions. The earth journey offers the space to wander through questions such as: where am I going?, what must I leave behind?, what do I need to learn now?, and what will I have to offer from the next phase of my life?
We can be offered healing or renewal, through answers to questions such as what do I need to see about my life now? what part of myself do I need to reclaim?, what will help me move toward greater wholeness?, and what are my gifts that I can offer my community? The opportunity in this wandering “the medicine” is the discovery of your unique expression of presence, relationship to the divine, and capacity to awaken to your potential, what you need in order to be whole, and what you have to offer others.
During your earth journey, the spirits of nature — attracted by the nature of your own “medicine energy” — reveal themselves to you. Together, they and you weave an allegorical or symbolic story, which can answer questions; reveal your inherent gifts or future path; or shows the rituals or ceremonies to perform to become whole.
One morning you awoke to a roaring in your ears, a distance calling to change your life. You followed that sound to the sacred river that is the threshold to your transformation.
Going on a Earth Journey:
I will guide you in discovering your own truth and your life story that informs that truth. Upon deciding to undertake a medicine walk, you will inform us of your intent, and a schedule will be worked out. I will initially provide you with a reading assignment and preparation questions to mediate on. We will then have 2 sessions of at least 2 hours long, one session before and then after. The first session is an opportunity to discuss the journey you will undertake, what is the story you are carrying with you out into the wild and what you are searching for. We will concentrate on clarifying life issues and intentions, and considering alternative models through which to view current dilemmas.
After you have completed the medicine walk a second session is scheduled where you will share the story of your walk. Together we will discover through your story life-myths, places of struggle, strengths and gifts. We explore what keeps you from the path you seek and/or that which you struggle to let go of. Through mirroring, questioning and guiding I will support you in seeing what keeps you from your truth and awakening to the new story you wish to bring into the world.
Your earth journey begins at sunrise and ends at sunset. The walk can be taken at a prearranged location that I select, a location we pick out together, or one you may choose that has personal meaning for you.
